At Carolina Eye Doctors, our team strives to help your children achieve clear vision for a lifetime. Our pediatric eye exams not only give us a chance to examine your children’s eyes but also allow us to teach your children about their eyes and vision.

We proudly participate in the InfantSEE program to help ensure all children have access to eye care and the early detection of potential ocular and visual problems.

Our team at Carolina Eye doctors is looking forward to welcoming you and your children! Schedule an eye exam with us today to get started.

Myopia Management at Carolina Eye Doctors

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition that typically occurs during childhood and makes distant objects appear blurry. Myopia can develop gradually or rapidly, but regular eye exams can help detect it in either case. Every case of myopia is different, so it’s important to visit us and get the right solution for your child.

At Carolina Eye Doctors, we offer various methods of myopia control, including ortho-k lenses and Ovitz. For more information, visit our Myopia Management page.

Eye Exam Frequency

At Carolina Eye Doctors, we encourage frequent eye exams so we can detect potential issues quickly and recommend treatment options to preserve your child’s long-term vision.

The recommended eye exam frequency for children is:

  • First exam at 6–12 months of age
  • At least 1 exam between 3–5 years of age
  • 1 exam before first grade and annually from ages 6–17

Your child’s early years are a crucial time for visual development. Any undiagnosed issues like amblyopia (lazy eye) or strabismus (crossed eyes) can lead to vision complications down the road.

We may recommend changes to your child’s eye exam schedule depending on what’s best for their visual needs and health when you come in for your next appointment.

What to Expect During the Exam

We take pride in welcoming kids of all ages! Our exams are personalized to create a comfortable environment for your child. We also aim to help them understand each test so they can have an enjoyable experience.

If your child has any special needs, please let our team know so we can properly accommodate them.

A pediatric comprehensive eye exam generally includes:

  • A full vision evaluation
  • A series of tests to evaluate your child’s eye teaming, movement, and focusing
  • Exercises to rule out strabismus and amblyopia
  • Prescription evaluation using a retinoscope
  • Eye pressure testing with the iCare tonometer
  • Internal and external evaluations of the eyes to assess your child’s eye health

We use different diagnostic tools to ensure our exams are thorough and check for any possible issues.
